“HIGHEST IN THE ROOM” is the October 2019 single from American rapper Travis Scott (real name Jacques Webster), and discusses the relationship he has with his now ex-girlfriend and mother of his child, Kylie Jenner. The track also discusses how Scott is always the “highest in the room”, referencing extreme and constant drug usage.
Written by Scott, Ozan Yildirim, Nik Frascona and Mike Dean, “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM” was well-received by fans and music critics, however was met with some backlash and rumours due to the topic of the track. In an interview with Beats Radio Zane Lowe back in March 2019, Scott discussed the track and his choice to perform the song live in concerts before its release: “To be honest, it was sort of just something I wanted to perform at the time. I was just performing it at a point where I’ve done it at so many shows, and it’s been so fun doing it, I was like, I gotta just drop this, and I’m gearing up for something more special to come following that.” In many interviews with Billboard to the Rolling Stone, Scott has had to clarify that his songs about extreme drug usage are to do with a character he likes to portray musically, rather than his actual self. The song had originally been used in an advert for Jenner’s cosmetic line, as well as being performed live before its official release in October 2019. A remix of the song featuring Spanish musician Rosalía and American rapper Lil Baby was released on the 27th December 2019.
The music video was released alongside the song, on the 4th October 2019. Directed by well-known directed Dave Meyers, as well as Travis Scott himself. It follows Scott in a dream like world, while he smokes throughout the dream-like word, filled with large buildings and being kidnapped by men in suits. The video has over 146.3 million views with over 2.4 million likes.
