Amongst over 20 cover versions of this song, The X Factor’s version was the only hit aside from Bowie’s. The 16 finalists who performed the song were Matt Cardle, Nicolo Festa, Aiden Grimshaw, Paije Richardson, Treyc Cohen, Rebecca Ferguson, Cher Lloyd, Katie Waissel, John Adeleye, Mary Byrne, Storm Lee, Wagner, Belle Amie, Diva Fever, F.Y.D, and One Direction.

The use of quotation marks around the title meant that Bowie felt there was something ironic about being a rock ‘n’ roll hero to his fans, while he kept his own emotional life as far distant and remote and private as possible.
