“Gin and Juice” is a laid back hip-hop track from rapper Snoop Dogg. Released in 1994, it is considered to be a classic in the mainstream media, as well as arguably having one of the best hip-hop hooks of all time.
Written by Snoop Dogg (Calvin Broadus) and producer and rapper Dr. Dre (Andre Young), “Gin and Juice” tells the narrative of a party consisting of gin and juice, smoking marijuana and many sexual interactions. The song interpolates Slave’s “Watching You” and George McCrae’s “I Get Lifted”.
The music video was directed by Dr. Dre, Calvin Caday and Anita Sisaath, and consists of a young Snoop Dogg throwing a house party while his parents are away. When his parents return, they see the party, evict the partygoers and confront Snoop Dogg. The video features cameos from Dr. Dre, Nate Dogg, Warren G and Lil Bow Wow. As of August 2019, the music video has over 10 million views on Snoop Dogg’s official YouTube channel since its upload in. 2016. However, there is another upload of the video on YouTube by a user named “idealistic”, where that video has almost 94 million views. The music video is #4 in the MTV2 and XXL’s list of the “25 Greatest West Coast Videos”.
