“Escapism.” is fifth track from British singer-songwriter RAYE and her upcoming debut album “My 21st Century Blues”, which is due to be released via Human Re Sources on the 3rd February 2023. “Escapism” was released independently along with the track “The Thrill Is Gone” on the 12th October 2022, and features American rapper 070 Shake.
The song itself is a story: detailing RAYE’s unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as casual hook-ups, excessive drug and alcohol use and ignoring all feelings in order to not feel pain – all lyrically and sonically, as the melody matches the song’s mood and tone throughout. RAYE’s reason for her unhealthy coping mechanisms is from a breakup, which she states in the first verse: “A little context if you care to listen / I find myself in a shit position / The man that I love sat me down last night / And told me that it’s over / Dumb decision”. The song is also 4 minutes and 32 seconds long, which is much longer than most pop tracks.
Speaking to DIY Mag, RAYE opened up about the song’s topic:
““Escapism” is about running away from reality as fast as you possibly can. Going out alone, ignoring everybody who has your best interest at heart […] When you’re your lowest of lows, it’s like survival mode mind numbing, running from real life because it’s not something you want to see. Sonically large and dramatic, something to accompany this feeling, to get lost to and maybe you might find some healing inside of it like I did.”
The song went viral on TikTok, leading to users lipsyncing the track, as well as a sped up version of the track becoming popular, leading RAYE to release a separate speedier version of the song.
The music video was released on RAYE’s official YouTube channel on 9th November 2022, and was directed by RAYE and Otis Dominique. As of the 9th December 2022, the video had a total of 1.8 million views.
