“Don’t Call Me Angel” (D.C.M.A”) is the lead single from the soundtrack for the upcoming remake of the iconic “Charlie’s Angels” film, due to be released in November 2019. It is sung by three well known women musicians: Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey.

“D.C.M.A” is a track centred around counteracting the male gaze and the objectification of women and their bodies. With the main lyric being “don’t call me angel, you ain’t got me right”, Grande, Cyrus and Del Rey each provide a different perspective to the track with their own distinctive sound (which some critics have praised, others have criticised). A fan tweeted Ariana Grande on the 23rd July asking: “how was it doing a song with Miley and Lana??”, to which Grande responded: “a whole dream. i love their voices so much and what they brought to the theme song so much. it’s perfect. they are true angels to me.” After the release of the track, media publications were quick to jump to conclusions about the track. Earlier this year, Miley Cyrus divorced long term partner Liam Hemsworth after one year of marriage, but over a decade of being together. ELLE magazine were quick to write an article bringing up the fact that Hemsworth used to called Cyrus “my little angel”, which lead people to believe that Cyrus’ verse was a personal attack on Hemsworth: “don’t call me angel when I’m a mess”. Cosmopolitan magazine were also quick to point out the music video was similar to a character Cyrus played on Disney when she was in her early teenage years: Hannah Montana. “Don’t Call Me Angel” had a similar track to the character, titled “I Got Nerve”, which she performed in a boxing ring on the show; while in “D.C.M.A” Cyrus is also shown in a boxing ring.

The music video was released the same day as the track (13th September 2019). Directed by Hannah Lux Davis and filmed in July 2019, it features the artists all in a large building, beating up men, practicing their knife throwing and wearing large dark angel wings. In less than 24 hours, the music video has over 25 million views. As of the 17th September 2019, the music video has over 50 million views, and almost 18 million Spotify plays.
