“Devil in a New Dress” is the eighth track on West’s fifth studio album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” which was released in 2010 through Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam. The song was written by Kanye West, Mike Dean, Roosevelt Harrell (Blink!), William Roberts (Rick Ross), Malik Jones, Gerry Goffin and Carole King, with production by Bink! and Mike Dean.
The alternative hip-hop song features a guest appearance from rapper Rick Ross, and samples Smokey Robinson’s infamous track “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”, and received extremely high praise from many music critics. The song covers topics of love and religion, with West and Ross delving into serious issues that rise from both. The song was recorded in Hawaii due to West’s media controversy at the time. Ross was invited to Hawaii to record “Devil in a New Dress”, and spoke about his experiences to MTV in 2010:
“I got a call, they wanted me to be a part of that record. […] It was actually the last day before Kanye had to turn the record in, and I think that pressure just made it that much more special to me. So I just sat there, approached the record openly and as straightforward as I could. When I laid the verse, 30 minutes later, I was extremely happy. I sent it to him, and he was too. I think it was one of the dopest verses I did this year.”
There is no music video for “Devil in a New Dress”, but an official audio upload of the song is available to listen to on Kanye West’s YouTube channel. Uploaded in 2018, the audio has almost 8 million views and 95 thousand likes.
