“ceilings” is the eighth track from American singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine and her second studio album “five seconds flat”, which was released in April 2022 through AWAL Records.
The folk-pop track sees McAlpine describe a dreamy relationship, which ultimately ends up being McAlpine reminiscing and dreaming about a relationship that had already ended. Speaking to People magazine, McAlpine revealed that the track is based aroun the feeling of nostalgia and longing for a past relationship:
“I had just ended things with someone and then went to London for three months to … not escape that [relationship], but also, kind of, do that. And this song is basically just a reflection on that relationship — but not being in it anymore.”
The song became popular on TikTok early 2023, where a trend began with young women running in rain and snow to the plot twist at the end of the song and gradually running faster.
The music video for the song was released on McAlpine’s YouTube channel on the 14th February 2023. As of the 27th April 2023, the video had a total of 7.5 million views.
“ceilings” is certified Gold in Australia and New Zealand, as well as Silver in the UK.
