Story of Song

In an Interview with Kidd Kraddick ‘In The Morning’, Carly spoke about the song’s origins: “Tavish and me were on the road actually and we were just jamming it out, like a little acoustic thing and we thought it was cute. Then we showed it to Josh and he was like ‘We gotta make this a dance song’ and I said ‘OK!’”
Carly was asked by MTV News if she asks a cute boy out just like the girl in her song, and she replied: “I generally just play eyes at a guy and hope he comes and approaches me, but in this particular instance I was thinking this is how I would do it.” When Jepsen was asked if she expected the huge success that ‘Call me Maybe’ achieved, she told Artist Direct: “When you write a bunch of songs, it’s like being asked to pick a favorite kid. You wonder what will be loved and which will just be my own little journal entry that I personally like. It was a surprise that it took off the way it did, but a welcome surprise. I think how it was written it was a folk song to begin with, and how it is about trying to pick up a guy. It is simple and feels good, and I am a romantic at heart. I like the idea of being in the moment of meeting someone, feeling that buzz and that feeling of attraction that you act on. You have to be spontaneous and brave. I have never been brave enough to ask for his number, but that’s how I would do it if I was.”
