Broken Glass” has inspirational lyrics like “don’t give up” and “I’m not discarding you like broken glass.” It’s a promise for people whose spirits need a little boost, and peaks with a key-changing climax that’ll leave you fist-bumping like Rocky. On the ballad, Sia belts in a softer register about a relationship that is falling apart and the desire to not give up. By the chorus, the track transitions into power-ballad mode after an Eastern-influenced start. She is encouraged, confident in enacting positive change and braced to fight for love. What plays out on the track, a slow-burning song that gradually builds to impassioned lyrical and sonic peaks, is a sage manifesto for lovers.
Sia doesn’t like to spend much time in the studio or writing a song. She writes at a fast pace while her co-writer Shatkin is painstaking. In an interview with the Guardian she said that Shatkin used to send her his bits of songs after he has finished with them. she explained why: “because i cannot sit in a room while someone’s fanning about. It makes me crazy. I literally don’t want to spend more that four hours in the studio.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone Sia said that this song is one of her favorite tunes off ‘This is Acting’, but she thought that it “might only be a bonus track.”
