“BLEACH” is the seventh track from American rap group collective BROCKHAMPTON and their 2017 album titled “SATURATION III”. Complex Magazine has described the group as “gay, black, white, DIY, ambitious, all-inclusive and would-be pop stars”. The group’s diversity and meaningful lyrics have led them to become critically acclaimed across the globe. The group currently consists of thirteen members: Kevin Abstract, Merlyn Wood, JOBA, Matt Champion, Dom McLennon, Bearface, Romii Hemnani, Jabari Manwa, Kiko Merley, Henock “HK” Sileshi, Robert Ontenient, Jon Nunes and Ashlan Grey.
Written and produced by BROCKHAMPTON themselves, “BLEACH” is a track that plays on the concept of bleach being a stain remover; each member of the band has a verse where they discuss their own different issues, which seem to relate to internal or personal struggles. Thus, the title of “BLEACH” for the track is used as a metaphor to attempt to wipe away each member’s own internal struggles. Ryan Beatty from the group spoke to The FADER magazine about how “BLEACH” came to be: “I had done background vocals on “Queer” but we had never written together or done like a real song together. Romil made the track, me and Ian were there. Dom came in. And Ian like sang the melody and it was that instant feeling. We tracked the vocals, people came into the room and I just remember feeling after we put the hook in like, “This song is special.” I just felt it immediately.”
There is no official music video for the track, but it is a part of a short film from the group titled “Billy Star”, released on the 13th December – two days before the album release. It features a young man cycling around on streets during a sunset while the song plays. The “Billy Star” short film has over 757 thousand views. There is an official audio video for the track that has over 3.2 million views.
