“Bitter” is the debut single taken from American singer FLETCHER and her sophomore EP “The S(ex) Tapes”, which was released on the 9th September 2020. The pop song was written by Mary Weitz, Australian producer Kito and FLETCHER – with Kito also producing the song.
“Bitter” uses layers of vocals and echoes to further add to the haunting sound of the song; discussing themes of jealousy and curiosity of a past lover and their new partner. The term “bitter” is used as a metaphor in the song, with FLETCHER hoping she tastes bitter on her ex-lover’s new partner’s mouth. The song insinuates a toxic or unfinished relationship between FLETCHER and her past lover, as she states that she bets that her old lover “sugarcoats the truth”. The song is a powerful all the way through, with both strength and emotion shining through in every line.
The music video for “Bitter” was released on FLETCHER’s YouTube channel on the 13th May 2020. It features shots of FLETCHER eating a lollipop, playing with honey, and singing into the camera. The video was edited, produced and directed by FLETCHER, as the whole song was produced over quarantine with Kito over FaceTime. As of late September 2020, the video has 1.7 million views and 37 thousand likes.
