In an interview with The Sun, Alexandra Burke explained: “It’s kind of reggae meets pop. It was inspired by my Jamaican background and my new convertible. I really wanted to have a tune I could take down my roof to, drive along and be proud of.”

Alexandra Burke worked with producer RedOne on this song. She revealed how that collaboration came about in an interview: “He wanted to work with me before I even won the show. He saw videos and liked me. At the time, he was in the process of working with [Lady] Gaga but it was before she became public. I can’t believe he had faith in me.”

In the UK, ‘Start Without You’ topped the Official Charts company; it also topped the charts in Scotland, and peaked at number 5 in Ireland. The song reached number 10 in Belgium, number 62 in Slovakia, and number 77 in the Netherlands. ‘Start Without You’ did not enter the charts in US and did not receive any certifications.
