Story of Song

“Love Me Like You Do” is the original soundtrack for the movie Fifty Shades of Grey and there’s more going on in the simple title than meets the eye. “In the popular movie, when college senior Anastasia Steele steps in for her sick roommate to interview prominent businessman Christian Grey for their campus paper, she doesn’t know that her life will take an unexpected turn. Christian, rich and powerful, finds himself attracted to Ana, and she feels the same. Young, beautiful and sexually inexperienced, Ana goes into an affair with Christian and learns that his true sexual desires push the boundaries of pain and pleasure.

Goulding’s lyrics reflect this ambiguity:

“You’re the fear, I don’t care
‘Cause I’ve never been so high
Follow me to the dark
Let me take you past our satellites
You can see the world you brought to life, to life
So love me like you do,
Touch me like you do,
What are you waiting for?”

Ellie Goulding told Dave Berry and Lisa Snowdon on the Capital Breakfast show about the video, saying: “I basically have become fascinated with ballroom dancing so I was like, ‘Can I please do some dancing in it?” The video mixes footage from the movie with shots of Goulding dancing in the ballroom, a re-creation of Ana’s first dance with Christian.
